DEMENTIUM: THE WARD

Content warnings: hospitals, surgeries

Originally planned to be a Silent Hill game (later described as "DOOM 3 meets Silent Hill"), Dementium: The Ward was released in 2007 by Renegade Kid for the Nintendo DS. The story follows William Redmoor, who wakes up in a medical ward. William suffers from amnesia. The hospital he wakes up in is actually abandoned and filled with monsters and other strange creatures. There are sixteen chapters, and several bosses. Newspaper clippings can be found as you progress; specifically, they're about some guy who brutally murdered his wife (while leaving their daughter unharmed), and authorities believe that William is the killer. William sometimes sees visions of his daughter Amanda and some guy who we only know as "The Doctor". Renegade Kid pulls a "but it was all a dream" and, after we defeat this "Doctor" guy, we see William being operated on. Both the Wikipedia article and the Dementium wiki say that he's being lobotomised, but looking at screenshots from the game, it resembles more of an open brain surgery than anything.

I'm not kidding when I say I can't sleep without listening to a playthrough of this game. It's comforting, in a way (until I have to listen to the electric buzz saw buzzing away for extended periods of time. Sigh...)

DOOM

Ah yes! DOOM! I'm kinda late to the party, I got into DOOM 27 years after it was released, but in my defense, I never really liked FPS games prior to this. But anyway! My favourite DOOM game would have to be DOOM 64, released in 1997 for the Nintendo 64. It just gives off really good *~horror~* vibes. The redesigned enemies also look pretty cool. Aside from DOOM 64, I'm very fond of DOOM II: Hell on Earth. I love the sound the super shotgun makes. BANG! click clack clock amirite? Ha ha ha. I'm not too fond of the newer games (DOOM 2016 & DOOM Eternal) because they're just not fun to play in my opinion.

НАУТИЛУС ПОМПИЛИУС (nautilus pompilius)

A band founded in the early 1980s in Sverdlovsk. Disbanded in 1997. I said something about them on another site of mine and honestly? They made bangers. My absolute favourite song of theirs would be Eti Reki because it's just so!!! So nice! It doesn't matter if you understand or speak Russian or not; I'm sure many non-Russians (like myself!) would enjoy Nau's tunes. I can't get Eti Reki out of my head, god damn it.
Originally named Ali-Baba and the Forty Thieves (Ali-Baba i sorok razboynikov), this was later changed to Nautilus, and then lengthened to Nautilus Pompilius, after the cephalopod of the same (scientific) name; they mistakenly called it a nudibranch when elaborating on the band name at some point. Their old web site is still up!!! It's really cool and it has a Web 1.0 feel to it, in a way.

SERIAL EXPERIMENTS LAIN

I want to say that this one doesn't need an introduction, but I would be lying if I said that. Serial Experiments Lain is a 1998 anime television series which was broadcast for thirteen episodes from July to September of that same year. The protagonist, Iwakura Lain (where Iwakura is the family name), is an adolescent girl who has a relation to a global communications network known as the Wired, which is similar to our Internet, with the main difference being that the Wired is more of a virtual world than anything. Honestly, SEL is better experienced than described. It'll probably leave you with several questions, thoughts or feelings.
